A summer house on the North Sea island of Fanø, kept small and dark so the dunes and the sky stay in charge.

The site

Sand, marram grass and a wide grey sky, with the sea just over the dunes. The house sits low in the landscape and borrows its black tarred cladding from the island’s building tradition.

The approach

One simple pitched volume, one large window and a timber deck facing the dunes. Everything else is left out, so the house feels like a shelter rather than a statement.

Inside

Pale pine lines the walls and ceiling. A deep window seat frames the view, and a wood stove keeps the house usable on cold evenings at either end of the summer.
